Japan at Work
Throughout the 1960s, Robin Boyd’s interest in contemporary Japanese architecture was a prominent influence on both his written and architectural work. Boyd’s first visit in 1961 to research Kenzo Tange gave him a grounding in Japanese architecture, but his understanding grew significantly more nuanced with subsequent visits and correspondence. His commission as Exhibit Architect for the Australian Pavilion at Expo 70 in Osaka further exposed Boyd to the avant-garde of Japanese architecture. This section is divided into two parts: analysis of Japan found in Boyd’s writing, and Japanese influence in his architectural practice.
